Samsung's U.S. mobile market share falls in Q1
By Lee Youkyung
SEOUL, June 4 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co., the world's second-largest maker of mobile phones, remained the top seller in the U.S. wireless market during the February-April period but its overall market share dropped slightly, a market researcher said Saturday.
According to comScore Inc.'s survey of 30,000 mobile subscribers in the United States, Samsung's market share remained top with 24.5 percent during the three months ending April, down 0.4 percentage point from a year ago.
The market researcher did not elaborate on the drop in Samsung's market share but its mild decrease apparently stemmed from the rise of Apple Inc., which stole the No. 4 spot from Research In Motion Ltd.
Apple added 1.3 percentage points to its market share, the biggest advance among the top 5 mobile vendors, claiming a 8.3 percent market share in the U.S. market in the three month period.
Seoul-based LG Electronics Inc. was the runner-up with a 20.9 percent share in the U.S. market during the three-month stretch, according to the market researcher, followed by Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc., with a 15.6 percent share.
Research In Motion Ltd., the maker of the BlackBerry smartphone, rounded out the top five with a 8.2 percent share.
The research company said that Google Inc.'s Android system was the most dominant smartphone platform in the U.S. market with a 36.4 percent share. Apple's iOS trailed Android, claiming a 26 percent share in the highly competitive smartphone market.
