Samsung keeps No. 1 status in DRAM market despite falling share

SEOUL (Yonhap) - South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. saw its market share in global sales of computer memory chips decline during the first quarter but it still kept the world's leading position in the area, a report showed Sunday.
Samsung Electronics sold $3.26 billion worth of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips during the January-March period, making up 39.3 percent of global sales, down 2 percentage points from three months earlier, according to the report by industry research firm iSuppli.
The market share declined amid market conditions caused by weak prices of DRAMs, mostly used in personal computers and other devices such as mobile phones. Samsung still retained its No. 1 position in the market.
Average DRAM prices fell to $1.61 during the first quarter from $1.97 in the previous three months, the report showed. Due to weak prices, global sales also contracted 5.6 percent to $8.3 billion.
Another Korean chipmaker, Hynix Semiconductor Inc., kept its No. 2 status by selling $1.91 billion worth of DRAMs during the first quarter. Its market share stood at 23 percent, the report showed.
Japan-based Elpida Memory Inc. and U.S.-based Micron Technology Inc. ranked third and fourth, respectively, with market shares of 13.5 percent and 13.0 percent.
The report expected a tougher competition between Elpida and Micron for third place at a time when Samsung Electronics and Hynix Semiconductor will likely keep their strong positions in the world's computer memory chip market.
