S. Korea picks 11 maritime R&D projects

SEOUL (Yonhap) - South Korea said Tuesday that it has selected 11 maritime research and development (R&D) projects mostly intended to strengthen the nation's infrastructure for future scientific research in the ocean.
The development of a next-generation autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) and a large-scale exploration ship loaded with high-tech research equipment is among the newly designated R&D projects, according to the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs.
They also include plans to build an additional scientific research base in the Antarctic and develop technologies related to enhancing safety and environmental protection in the ocean, the ministry noted.
In particular, South Korea seeks to build a 5,000-ton exploration ship by the end of 2014, allowing it to carry state-of-the-art research equipment for its research activities. It will likely replace the existing research ship, which has been in operation for the past 20 years.
The ministry added that it will step up efforts to build an additional research base in the Antarctic by its earlier target year of 2014.
In March last year, South Korea selected the site for the envisioned second base near the Ross Sea on the southeastern tip of the Antarctic in order to expand its research capacity there. Korea has been running one such base in the frozen continent since 1988.
