S. Korea aims to grab 18 pct of global green energy market by 2030

SEOUL (Yonhap) - South Korea will seek to grab 18 percent of the global green energy market by 2030 by developing key technologies and creating a favorable domestic environment, the government said Tuesday.
The new road map calls for concentrated efforts in 15 eco-friendly research and technology (R&D) areas in order to enhance industrial competitiveness and help create more jobs, the Ministry of Knowledge Economy said.
The areas that will be built up are solar and wind power generation, fuel cells, bio-fuel, integrated gasification combined cycle and power storage. Nuclear power, green cars, smart grids and clean thermal power production will also be developed.
The development plans are based on a prediction that the worldwide market will grow steadily in the coming years as countries move to limit greenhouse gas emission levels to stem global warming.
South Korea, which is not currently compelled to cut back on greenhouse gas emissions, has voluntarily pledged to release 30 percent less greenhouse gas into the environment than the business-as-usual level by 2020. Cutting back on greenhouse gases and turning toward green technology could allow resource-poor South Korea to reduce energy imports that reached $121.6 billion last year.
"If the road map is followed through, the country's global green energy market share that stands at just 1.2 percent at present will go up 15-fold in the next 20 years," the ministry said.
By the target year, the domestic market may top 94 trillion won (US$87 billion), with exports reaching 328 trillion won, it forecast. Such gains represent a considerable gain from 8.12 trillion won in total sales and US$4.58 billion worth of exports achieved by local companies last year.
The ministry added that the growth could create 1.5 million new jobs in the green energy field by the target year from 13,380 engaged in related jobs as of last year.
If the country manages to expand its presence in the global green energy market as planned, this could lead to the country cutting back greenhouse gas emissions by 210 million tons by 2030, it said.
The ministry, meanwhile, said exact R&D support needs to be worked out so the private sector and government can determine how much money needs to go into the field. In 2010, investment in the sector reached 3.56 trillion won. The latest plan is a follow-up to the first road map set up in 2009.
