HARMONIOUS HINDU-ISLAM RELATIONS IN BALI ROOTED IN HISTORY : OFFICIAL

Denpasar, Bali, Sept 9 (ANTARA) - Traditional Hindu Bali royal rulers are known to have always maintained cordial relations with Muslim communities living in their respective realms and this condition must be maintained and even further developed, a regional religious affairs official said.

"The friendly relations do not only exist today but we know from ancient writings left in a number of Hindu temples, they also prevailed in the past," said H Mudzakir, head of social worship, halal product, Islamic mass guidance for partnerships and hajj affairs at Bali's provincial religious affairs office, said here Tuesday.
The ancient writings told about the existence of friendly and harmonious relations between Hindus and Muslims, he said.

According to history, Islam entered Bali through Serangan, south Denpasar, in the 17th century. It started with the arrival of a number of boats from Java in Denpasar during the reign of King Cokorda Pemecutan III who bore the title of Batara Sakti.

At the time, the kingdom of Pemecutan was in conflict with its neighbor, the kingdom of Mengwi, and the conflict eventually led to an open war. The visitors from Java who had actually been stranded in Denpasar because of damage to their boats were then used by King Pemecutan as soldiers in the war against the Mengwi kingdom.

It was since then that friendly and harmonious relations developed between Balinese royalty and Hindu people and Muslims in Bali. "These traditional good relations are expected to be maintained and even to grow further," Mudzakkir said.

He said until now Nindus often visit Muslim people during the latter's fasting month of Ramadhan to break the fast together. Recently, Hindu religious leaders from Pemecutan temple in Denpasar visited Muslim counterparts in Kepaon Mosque in Serangan village, he said.
