Finance minister urges unified policy front
SEOUL (Yonhap) - South Korea needs more cooperation among policymakers, the top economic chief said Wednesday, emphasizing the importance of a unified front in swiftly dealing with the nation's major pending economic issues.
During his first economic policy coordination meeting after taking office as the nation's finance minister last week, Bahk Jae-wan also reaffirmed that the government will do its best to stabilize the livelihoods of ordinary people and create jobs.
"We should heed the demand from our people to stabilize their livelihoods and generate jobs," Bahk told the meeting. "I urge you to lower the still-remaining partitions among ministries and agencies, and deal with major pending issues as a single team."
Bahk was inaugurated on Thursday as the new finance minister, replacing Yoon Jeung-hyun, who served as the top economic policymaker for more than two years. In his inauguration speech, the former labor minister Bahk said he will place top priority on keeping inflation under control and generating jobs.
His remarks on reaching a consensus among policymakers might be in response to the long-lasting differences that hampered his predecessor from carrying out major reforms of the nation's service sector.
The finance ministry and the health ministry remain at odds over the introduction of corporate-style hospitals. The former argues such for-profit hospitals will boost competition and raise service quality, while the latter says they will only result in hiking up medical bills.
Bahk emphasized the importance of "teamwork" in crafting polices, saying that the government has to work hard to gain the trust of lawmakers and people by approaching them on a single unified front formed through "sufficient" internal debate.
As the finance minister presiding over the weekly policy coordination meeting, Bahk also noted that he will "do whatever it takes" to encourage all participants to freely exchange their opinions and views on major policy issues.
