SEOUL (Yonhap) - Container cargo handled at South Korea's seaports grew nearly 8 percent last month from a year earlier, fueled by the continued global economic recovery, the transportation ministry said Wednesday.
South Korea's seaports handled a total of 1.85 million TEUs, or 20-foot equivalent units, in May, up 7.8 percent from the same month a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs.
This marked the third consecutive month that the nation's cargo handling has surpassed the 1.8 million TEU mark.
Of the total, container cargo shipped in and out of the country rose 5.4 percent on-year to 1.15 million TEUs. Cargo transferred to other domestic ports also jumped 40.2 percent over the same period, the ministry said.
