RI TO EXTEND US$100,000 IN AID TO LAOS
Jakarta, Sept 9 (ANTARA) - Indonesia is to extend US$100,000 worth of aid to Laos which was recently hit by the largest flood in the last 100 years, a government spokesman said.
"President Yudhoyono has agreed to give US$100,000 worth of assistance to Laos," presidential spokesman Dino Pati Djalal said here on Tuesday.
Earlier, Dino said the Lao government had asked for help from the international community to overcome the disaster.
He said South Korea had sent US$30,000 while Japan 12 million yen.
Laos was hit by floods since August 15 and conditions in the country had been worsened by a tropical storm in the past three days causing the water level in the Mekong River to rise up to 13 meters.
The damage caused the disaster has been estimated at US$80 million. Six people had died while 200,000 others were displaced.
