POSCO buys into U.S. graphene manufacturer
SEOUL, June 8 (Yonhap) -- POSCO, South Korea's leading steelmaker, said Wednesday that it signed a deal to purchase a stake in a U.S. graphene manufacturer as part of efforts to diversify its business portfolio.
Under the deal, POSCO becomes the largest shareholder of XG Sciences Inc. with a 20 percent stake. The South Korean steelmaker did not reveal financial terms for the deal, but industry sources estimate the deal at around US$4 million.
POSCO said it will produce graphene under a licensing deal with XG Sciences and is seeking to set up a graphene-producing facility in China next year.
Graphene is a flat sheet of nearly transparent carbon that is extremely strong and a good conductor of electricity.
Thanks to such properties, scientists at universities and companies around the world are developing product applications for graphene in industries such as aerospace, automobiles, alternate energy, electronics and coatings.
