S. Korean doctor elected as chief of int'l hospital body

HONG KONG, June 8 (Yonhap) -- A South Korean doctor was elected Wednesday as president of an international hospital organization, marking the first time that a South Korean national has been selected to take the post.
The organizing committee of the International Hospital Federation (IHF) agreed to appoint Kim Kwang-tae, honorary chairman of the Korean Hospital Association, as the next president of the federation at a meeting held in Hong Kong.
The IHF, an alliance organization of the World Health Organization, is a France-based international non-governmental organization, supported by members from over 100 countries.
It was established in 1929 as the worldwide body for hospitals and health care organizations, with the primary goals of improving patient safety and promoting health in underserved communities. Since 1981, South Korea has been one of the organization committee countries for the IHF.
After he receives approval at the IHF World Hospital Congress to be held at Dubai in November, Kim will start serving from 2013 as the IHF president for two years.
"My plan is to make the IHF a cohesive and financially stable organization," he said. "To respond to member countries' requests for carrying out new research, I will make full efforts to set up a resource pool composed of experts."
