Photos explore shrinking of Lake Urmia at Tehran gallery

TEHRAN, June 8 (MNA) -- Photos on the drying of Lake Urmia taken by Esfandiar Asgharkhani are currently on display during a showcase at Tehran’s Laleh Gallery.

Entitled “The Lake Is Closed”, the showcase includes 30 shots of the lake taken over the past 30 years that depict the rapid shrinking of the third largest salt water lake on earth.

In an interview with the West Azerbaijan News Website (AINA News), Asgharkhani said that he aims to depict the environmental catastrophe that is taking place at the lake in order to inform people about it.

The long popular lake located in northwestern Iran, home to migrating flamingos, pelicans and gulls, has shrunk by 60 percent and could disappear entirely in just a few years, experts say.

It is one of the largest natural habitats for the tiny Artemia, which is a genus of aquatic crustacean that serves as a food source for flamingos and other migratory birds.

The salt lake is the largest lake in the Middle East, and the third largest salt water lake on earth.

UNESCO has registered Lake Urmia as a Biosphere Reserve, and it is listed as a wetland of international importance under the 1971 Ramsar Convention.

The showcase will run until June 15 at the gallery which is located on Fatemi St., near Laleh Park.
