Qtel Redesignates Top Executives to Spur Global Growth


Doha, June 09 (QNA) - Qatar Telecom (Qtel) has redesignated a number of senior management executives to continue its ambitious drive for growth in international markets.
The telecom operator announced the changes following its board meeting held yesterday.
Qtel Group Chairman Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Saud Al Thani said, "The Qtel Group continues to drive toward its ambitious goals for growth and ensuring that our management team is among the strongest in the region will help us achieve this vision. The appointments will enhance the foundations for growth across our international markets, while at the same time maintaining and building upon our leadership position in our home market of Qatar."
Among the management changes announced, Qtel CEO Dr. Nasser Marafih is now the CEO of Qtel Group with responsibility for driving efficiencies and growth across all the Group companies.
Dr. Marafih began his career at Qtel in 1992 as Expert Advisor from the University of Qatar and was seconded to the organisation as Strategic Planning and Development Manager in 1994.
Since becoming CEO in 2002, Dr. Marafih has led Qtel to success, guiding it through its transformation programme and the restructuring of the company in Qatar and across the region. During Qtel's robust international expansion, he held the dual roles of Qtel Qatar CEO and Qtel Group CEO.
"I would like to pay tribute to Dr. Nasser who has been one of the most influential individuals in the development of the communications technology sector in Qatar. He now plays a critically-important role in leading the Qtel Group s global growth," said Sheikh Abdullah.
Sheikh Saud bin Nasser Al Thani will take the position of CEO of Qtel. He was previously the Executive Director of HR and General Services. He joined Qtel in 1990 and, over 21 years with the company, has gained a wide range of experience and knowledge in the business. In his new role, he will direct operations throughout Qatar.
Sheikh Saud has handled key projects like the restructuring of the organisation in 1998, the structure review in 2000 and the job evaluation and compensation review with Qtel s auditors KPMG. He is also on the Board of the Sultanate of Oman's Nawras which is part of the Qtel Group. Through his dual portfolio of HR and General Services, Sheikh Saud has developed a comprehensive understanding of the Qtel business in Qatar and has played a key role in developing new processes for growth, Qatarisation and human development.
Waleed Al Sayed, formerly Executive Director of Customer Services, was named as the new Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Qtel Qatar. He has held senior roles across Sales, Marketing, Project Management, Business Solutions, Communication and Customer Services within Qtel.
Nick Dent, formerly COO of Qtel Qatar, will work with Al Sayed on the transfer process before moving to a new role within the Qtel Group. (QNA)
