Hyundai Motor joins industry lobby of European automakers
SEOUL, June 10 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's leading automaker Hyundai Motor Co. has joined an industry lobby of European carmakers, becoming part of Europe's automaking industry, the company said Friday.
Hyundai Motor on Thursday (European time) became the 17th member of the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association, better known by its French name, Association des Constructeurs Europeens d'Automobiles (ACEA).
Hyundai Motor is the second Asian company to become a full member of the European organization following Japan's Toyota Motor Corp. The company is also the fourth member of the ACEA with its headquarters based outside of Europe after Toyota and the United States' General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co., according to Hyundai Motor.
The membership came two years after Hyundai Motor's request, and 34 years after the company began selling vehicles in the European market, it said.
"The company sincerely welcomes the ACEA's decision," Hyundai Motor said in a press release. "With its official membership to the ACEA, Hyundai Motor will continue to do its utmost to help develop Europe's automobile industry."
Currently, Hyundai has a plant in the Czech Republic that produces up to 300,000 units a year and a European sales network based in Germany, Hyundai Motor Europe GmbH.
The company sold 358,284 vehicles in Europe last year, up 4.7 percent from a year earlier, it said. In the first four months of this year, the company's sales in Europe rose 6.7 percent from the same period last year to 137,246 units, despite a 2.4 percent drop in combined sales of all automakers in Europe during the cited period.
