Arab League condemns Iran's occupation of three UAE islands

Cairo, Sept 10, 2008 (WAM) - The Arab League's Council of Foreign Ministers has condemned the continued Iranian occupation of UAE's three islands, Greater and Lesser Tunbs and Abu Mousa.

Concluding the 130th meeting, the council also called upon Iran to end its occupation of the three islands, and stop building installations on the islands with the aim of changing its demography.

In a resolution approved at the session held at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo, the council strongly condemned Iran's flagrant violation of UAE's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The council reiterated UAE's unconditional right to the three islands, and supported all the initiatives of the UAE to restore its sovereignty over the islands through peaceful means.

The council strongly criticised the recent actions of Iran of building two offices on the Abu Mousa island, and asked Iran to immediately remove the illegal structures.

The resolution also condemned the Iranian settlements on the UAE's three islands with an aim of arbitrarily changing their demographic structure. It also condemned Iran's military exercises covering the islands, the territorial waters, the airspace and the economic region belonging to the three islands.

Any action of this kind will be considered an interference in the internal affairs of an independent, sovereign state, and such actions will never promote mutual trust as they threaten peace and security in the region, and expose the safety of territorial and international navigation to danger, said the council.
