Opposition politician implicated in savings bank scandal
SEOUL, June 14 (Yonhap) -- Prosecutors said Tuesday that they are looking into allegations that a former opposition lawmaker received kickbacks from a troubled savings bank in return for business favors, amid their widening probe into the snowballing banking scandal.
Kim Yang, vice president of Busan Savings Bank now under arrest, confessed to prosecutors that he delivered a bag of 30 million won (US$27,647) to Suh Gap-won while he was serving as lawmaker of the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) in 2008, the Supreme Prosecutors' Office said.
In January, Suh lost his parliamentary seat when a top court ruling confirmed his bribery conviction.
Investigators suspect the savings bank executive handed over the money to Suh, who was elected in the southwestern city of Suncheon, in return for favors in a 55 billion won construction project financed by Busan Savings Bank.
The corruption scandal centers on corrupt savings banks seeking the influence of high-level politicians and senior officials in exchange for bribes in an attempt to avoid punishment for extending illegal loans and a string of other irregularities.
