DP's Sohn favored as next president, GNP's Park likely to win: student survey

SEOUL, June 14 (Yonhap) -- Students at Seoul National University (SNU) favor opposition leader Sohn Hak-kyu to be the next president, although they think his potential ruling party rival Park Geun-hye has a greater chance of winning next year's election, a survey showed Tuesday.
According to the survey conducted by SNU's campus magazine between April and May, 18.3 percent of 660 respondents picked Sohn Hak-kyu, leader of the opposition Democratic Party (DP), as their favorite candidate to run in next year's presidential election.
Former ruling Grand National Party leader Park came in second with 16.4 percent support, with Rhyu Si-min of the fledgling People's Participatory Party in third with 9.2 percent. About 24 percent of the respondents said they don't support any particular candidate.
The results run counter to most opinion polls that put Park well ahead of Sohn.
But over 50 percent of the students surveyed expected Park to become South Korea's next leader, compared with 14.8 percent who said they expect Sohn to win the presidency.
Despite Park's high popularity, 18.1 percent said they would prefer that she not win the presidency. The former GNP leader is the daughter of former president Park Chung-hee, whose controversial term in office brought rapid economic development as well as crackdowns on the pro-democracy movement.
Regarding social problems they would like to see the next president address, the students at the nation's top university listed such tasks as narrowing the gap between the rich and poor, developing the economy and improving inter-Korean relations.
