football match fixing-reward Football league to offer cash rewards for tip-offs on match fixing
South Korea's top professional football league said Tuesday that it will offer financial rewards for individuals who report on corruption within the league, including match-fixing attempts. The K-League said the compensation will be between 10 million won (US$9,210) and 100 million won, depending on the severity of the reported misconduct. The move is the latest among countermeasures the K-League has introduced following the outbreak of match-fixing scandals last month. Prosecutors have indicted 10 active K-Leaguers for allegedly accepting money from gambling brokers in exchange for offering to throw their teams' games. It was the first match-fixing scandal to hit the K-League, which was founded in 1983. Tip-offs can be sent via e-mail at clean@kleague.com, reported by phone at 02-2002-0686 or by fax at 02-2002-0670. Whistle-blowers may also visit the Seoul-based league office in person. The K-League also announced Tuesday that it has extended the deadline for players to report themselves for match fixing by another two weeks, to the end of this month. The initial deadline was set for Monday, but league representatives agreed to push it back to June 30. The league has vowed to offer reduced penalties for players who turn themselves in and also to ask prosecutors to lessen punishment on such players
