Daewoo Shipbuilding sets up wind power-related JV in Canada
Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., a South Korean shipyard, said Wednesday that it has constructed a plant in Canada that produces wind turbine blades and windmill towers.
The plant in Nova Scotia produces 200 wind turbine blades and 250 windmill towers annually, the company said.
In March last year, Daewoo Shipbuilding and the Canadian province of Nova Scotia agreed to establish a joint venture to build a wind farm.
Daewoo Shipbuilding holds a 51 percent stake in the joint venture with the remainder to be owned by Nova Scotia.
In 2009, the South Korean shipyard took over DeWind Inc., a U.S. wind power company, as part of efforts to diversify its revenue source amid falling new orders.
Daewoo Shipbuilding's latest foray into the wind power business underscores local shipbuilders' advances into new business areas to diversify its business portfolio.
Daewoo Shipbuilding said the joint venture aims to generate sales of US$150 million annually by 2015.
