S. Korea's air cargo traffic falls in May
South Korea's air cargo traffic declined in May from a year earlier partly due to less outbound shipments to quake-ravaged Japan, the transportation ministry said Wednesday.
South Korea's air cargo shipments came to about 286,000 tons last month, down 8.7 percent from the same month a year earlier, according to the ministry.
International air cargo fell 9.9 percent to 263,000 tons, while domestic cargo rose 8.8 percent to 23,000 tons. Japan-bound shipments plunged 16.7 percent from a year earlier as demand weakened following the deadly March 11 earthquake and ensuing nuclear crisis, the ministry said.
Incheon International Airport, South Korea's largest airport, handled a total of 253,000 tons of air cargo, down 10.6 percent from a year earlier.
Smaller airports in Gimpo, in western Seoul, and Gimhae, in Korea's southeast, however, posted 17 percent and 8.8 percent on-year gains, respectively, the ministry noted.
