Automated immigration service users on rise
A growing number of international tourists are benefiting from the automated immigration checkpoints at the nation's major airports, the Justice Ministry said Wednesday, citing the latest statistics.
Electronic counters set up at the nation's international airports recorded a daily average of 9,048 users this month, marking a 24 percent surge from the same period last year, the ministry said.
Incheon International Airport, the nation's main gateway, and Gimpo International Airport in western Seoul have operated the unmanned immigration counters since 2008.
For tourists' convenience, the immigration service will also put the system in place at the Korea City Airport Terminal and the Korea Trade Center in southern Seoul, which provide check-in services before passengers arrive at the airport, the ministry said.
The ministry said it will also add two more electronic counters at Gimpo International Airport and three more at Gimhae International Airport in the southwestern region later this year.
To use the system, passport holders are required to pre-register their photos and fingerprints at the airport immigration office.
Under an April deal signed by South Korea and the United States, immigration officials of the two sides will meet from Wednesday to Thursday in Seoul to discuss reciprocal use of unmanned immigration checkpoints within this year, ministry officials said.
