Chief prosecutors from around the world to descend on Seoul for summit
SEOUL, June 15 (Yonhap) -- Chief prosecutors from around the globe will gather in Seoul later this month for a summit on enhancing cooperation in criminal justice, the top prosecutors' office here said Wednesday.
According to the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, the fourth World Summit of Prosecutors General, Attorneys General and Chief Prosecutors will attract top-ranked prosecutors from 87 countries and other senior prosecutors from 111 countries total. The summit is scheduled for June 29-July 2 in the South Korean capital.
The theme of this year's meeting is "New Initiatives of the Prosecution Service -- Fair and Just Society," according to organizers. Topics for discussion include counteraction to emerging forms of crime, a shift toward cooperative mechanism, and the role, function and significance of prosecution services.
Kim Joon-gyu, prosecutor general of South Korea, will chair sessions on recovering proceeds of crime and cooperation. Participants will also endorse a "Seoul Declaration" detailing their pledge for international cooperation, organizers said.
The inaugural summit was held in Guatemala in 2004. Chile had been set to host the fourth summit but it withdrew following a devastating earthquake last year.
