Iranian, Russian, Kazakh presidents hold joint meeting in Astana
TEHRAN, June 18 (MNA) - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad held a joint meeting with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev on the sidelines of the 10th summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), which was held in Astana, Kazakhstan, on Wednesday.
On Thursday, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi briefed reporters on the minutes of the joint meeting, saying a range of issues, including Iran’s nuclear program, nuclear disarmament, non-proliferation, and Iran’s cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency were discussed during the meeting.
It was mentioned that negotiation is the best way to find a solution to global nuclear issues, Salehi stated.
President Ahmadinejad once again made it clear that the Islamic Republic of Iran has no intention of developing nuclear weapons, Salehi said.
The Iranian foreign minister added, “During the meeting, the president said that Iran is always ready for negotiation. The Russians also stated in the meeting that issues related to Iran (regarding nuclear issue) should only be discussed within the international framework and in the negotiations with the 5+1 group (the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China, and Germany).”
In addition, Russian officials said on Wednesday that President Ahmadinejad has told them that Tehran is prepared for closer cooperation with the IAEA, People’s Daily Online reported.
“We heard a reassurance from the Iranian president that additional steps will be made to ensure greater transparency of the Iranian nuclear program as part of contacts between Tehran and the IAEA,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was quoted as saying after the meeting between the Russian, Iranian, and Kazakh presidents.

Ahmadinejad also held separate meetings with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, and Kazah President Nursultan Nazarbayev on the sidelines of the summit.
During his meeting with Karzai, Ahmadinejad emphasized that foreign troops should leave the region as soon as possible since their presence has led to the promotion of terrorism in the region.
They also explored ways to further increase cooperation between Tehran and Kabul.
