Occupiers behind insecurity in Afghanistan: Iranian defense minister
TEHRAN, June 18 (MNA) – Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi has said the presence of extra-regional powers in Afghanistan is the reason behind friction, insecurity and dissipation of resources in the country.
Vahid made the remarks in a meeting with Afghan Defense Minister Abdul Rahim Wardak in Kabul on Saturday. This is the first visit by an Iranian defense minister to Afghanistan over the past 92 years.
Vahid also expressed concerns over the presence of occupiers in the ‘sensitive and strategic’ country of Afghanistan, saying that the only way for Afghanistan to make progress is to regain its independence.
Elsewhere in his remarks, he said Iran-Afghanistan ties are beyond diplomatic relations as Iranians and Afghans have always stood by each other in different situations.
Wardak, for his part, expressed satisfaction at Vahidi’s visit, saying Iran has always stood by the Afghan people in war times.
The Afghan government and people are grateful to Iran for its cooperation and assistance, Wardak added.
He went on to say that Afghanistan should be self-governing if it wants to move forward, adding Kabul expects friendly countries including Iran to support it.
The top Afghan defense official also called for expansion of cooperation in campaign against terrorism, narcotics and organized crimes.
