Primary Health Care Seeks to Obtain International Accreditation
Doha, June 18 (QNA) - Qatar's Primary Health Care has announced its intention to obtain international accreditation for its health centers within three years in order to improve the quality, the work environment and the health performance in those centers.
In a press conference held on the occasion, Primary Health Care Executive Director Dr. Mariam Abdul-Malik said the that Accreditation Canada International will assess the quality of care in Qatar s primary care centers.
In light of Qatar's National Health Strategy, which was launched recently, the primary health care is counting on the accreditation to develop a proper framework that will encourage staff and management to embrace a patient-centered approach, Dr. Mariam noted.
She added that HE the Minister of Health and Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Health signed an agreement with the Accreditation Canada International on June 13th, 2011, to provide tools to help the centers meet the highest international primary care standards.
Qatar s national Primary Care Network is composed of 22 centers with defined catchment areas, which provide ambulatory care, diagnostic and laboratory services, eye and dental care, and more.
Dr. Mariam noted that the accreditation process will go through several stages of which the first will start next September. The stages will include the assessment of the current situation in the health centers where a working group from the Accreditation Canada International will visit the centers, take notes and set standards. This process is ongoing and will include regular reports raised to the Primary Health Care, which in turn will meet the criteria required.
The required standards include many points, including patient care, staff, quality, therapeutic procedure, and others, she explained.
Meanwhile, Dr. Mariam unveiled a comprehensive plan for the development of health centers and the medical and technical staff working in the Primary Health Care.
She also revealed a five-year plan includes the establishment of 30 new health centers distributed in the country according to population density. (QNA)
