Qatar University, Qapco Sign Agreement to Establish Polymer Chair

Doha, June 18 (QNA) - Qatar University (QU) and Qatar Petrochemical Company (Qapco) have signed an agreement to establish a Professorial Polymer Chair at the varsity.
QU president Prof Sheikha Abdulla al-Misnad and Qapco vice chairman and chief executive officer Dr Mohamed Yusuf al-Mulla signed the agreement at a ceremony at QU.
The sponsorship is for an initial period of three years and Qapco will make an annual investment of QR950,000 to support the Chair based in QU s Materials Technology Unit (MTU).
Professor al-Misnad described QU s partnership with Qapco as very special while observing that the oil and gas industry are supporting the varsity a lot.
Dr al-Mulla stated that the support and development of polymer expertise is vital to the country s future success. "By developing skilled graduates, we are demonstrating our continuing mission to engage the needs of the community towards realising the sustainability goals of Qatar National Vision 2030," he explained.
The Polymer Chair will develop new research, application and training programmes in plastic industry. This will be integrated into undergraduate students projects, graduate thesis and summer internship/training programmes to boost sharing of knowledge at all levels.
The Chair will also provide specialised training for Qapco personnel to help support technical decision-making while encountering challenges in the industry.
"We will continue to support Qatar University as much as we can," Dr al-Mulla declared while pointing out that a good number of Qapco s Qatari employees are QU graduates.
The latest partnership with QU will help Qapco in its pursuit to develop new products and cater to the unique demands of the industry. MTU director and associate professor Dr Mariam Al Ali al-Maadeed recalled that Qapco has been supporting QU over the years.
"As many as 85% of Qapco management are Qatari and most of them are QU graduates," she said while adding that the new partnership will contribute to research, student education and consultation among others.
Qapco s group manager (administration) Rashid Abdulla al-Sulaiti said that the contribution is in line with the company s corporate social responsibility programme.
QU vice-president for research Dr Hassan al-Derham, vice president and chief financial officer Dr Humaid Abdullah al- Medfaa and other officials from QU and Qapco were also present on the occasion. (QNA)
