Anti-corruption seminar held

(KPL) The State Inspection Authority in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations Development Programme held a workshop on UN Convention Against Corruption and launched the Asia-Pacific Human Development Report on 11-12 September at the International Cooperation Training Centre.
The function was co-chaired by Mr. Bounpone Sangsomsack, Standing Member of the Party Central Control Committee and State Inspection Authority, and Ms Sonam Yangchen Rana, UN Coordinator, that drew 100 representatives from international organisations in Laos and relevant authorities.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr. Bounpone said that the workshop was being organised while the whole Lao society and all Lao people were concentrating all efforts towards implementing the resolutions of the 8th Party Congress, the National Constitution and Law, the National Socio-Economic Development Plan and the UN Millennium Development Goals.
The tangible outcomes are being recorded, contributing to the maintenance of the political stability of the country, the national economic growth and gradually improving the living conditions of the Lao people.
At the same time, the Lao Government has paid great attention to combating and eliminating negative phenomena in society. Particularly, the Lao Government has a clear and decisive policy to combat corruption, which is a major obstacle and distortion of the development process.
The workshop was in line with the Lao Government policies and will contribute to the international cooperation in combating corruption worldwide.
During the two-day workshop, the participants will study in depth the provisions of the UN Convention against Corruption, engage in gap analysis and be exposed to the experiences of other countries in their implementation of the UN Convention.
The workshop offered a special occasion to officially launch the Asia-Pacific Human Development Report of the United Nations Development Programme, Tackling Corruption, Transforming Lives, which identifies, among others, the adverse impact of corruption on development and makes a range of useful recommendations for better performance.
