Kyodo disaster photo wins top place in news photo contest

ULAN BATOR (Kyodo) - A photo taken by Japan's Kyodo News following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan's northeastern region was chosen Wednesday as the best image among those displayed in a photo exhibition held by the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies in the Mongolian capital of Ulan Bator.
The photo shows a woman crying while holding the exposed hand of her mother's body buried in debris in Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture, on March 16.
Among disaster-related photos, two other Kyodo pictures were also chosen as third best.
The organization, known as OANA, consists of around 40 news agencies in the Asia-Pacific region. The best photos were selected in a ballot of member agencies.
