WEDDINGS DERAILED BY ILLEGAL DEMOS

KUALA LUMPUR, July 9 (Bernama) -- Several weddings planned in the city
Saturday were dealt a blow because of illegal street demonstrations.

The hosts of a wedding ceremony in Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, the location
where The Malay right-wing group Association of Malaysia Native Mighty (PERKASA)
supporters planned to assemble, felt the full impact when they experienced poor
guest turnout.

For bride Mona Farhana Ithnin, 29, and her husband Irman Hafiz, 29, words
could not describe how disappointed they were that roadblocks put to prevent the
illegal rallies made it difficult for friends and family to celebrate their
joyous occassion, with some guests forced to park their vehicles far from the
venue.

"This illegal demonstrations are a nuisance. We planned our wedding a year
ago but because of this demonstrations we had to fork out extra money for
caterers to watch over our dais, chairs and tables Friday night," said Mona
Farhana, who hails from Sentul.

She said the family invited about 1,800 guests but only 200 people
filled the six canopies set up till 1pm.

Another garden-themed wedding planned for 3pm at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa was
also affected when the bride and groom had to ditch their plans for
a horse and carriage grand entrace from Hotel Putra, Jalan Tun Razak to the
lake.

Meanwhile, the hosts of a wedding at Wisma Sejarah, Jalan Tun Razak, fear
that their function will experience the same fate.

A family member, Hazree Wahid, 29, when met at the Dewan Tun Hamdan Sheikh
Tahir in Wisma Sejarah, said they were worried about the flow of the wedding
scheduled for 7.30pm tonight.

"The family and I are very worried about Saturday night, not only about the
attendance of relatives and guests but also safety factors," he said.

For 41-year-old wedding planner Shahidi Othman, the illegal demonstrations y
posed a challenge
for him to obtain wedding paraphernalia for the ceremony.

"Our preparations are a bit stunted because we are unable to get hands on
some of the items usually bought at Jalan Petaling, such as fresh flowers and
decorative candles, due to the road closures because of the illegal rallies," he
added.
