3,000 GRADUATES OF GAZAN UNIVERSITY VOW TO SERVE COUNTRY

By Saleh Jadallah

GAZA STRIP, July 11 (Bernama) -- Three thousand recent graduates of the Islamic University of Gaza continue to hope for a brighter future and wish to serve their country despite the difficult conditions in the blockaded Gaza Strip.

One of the graduates, Yazen Al-Mahhon, aspires to continue his education and get a Master's degree in history in the belief that Palestinians need educated people to serve the country.

He also wants to raise awareness in people about Palestinian history.

"We should preserve our history, and defy Israeli attempts to falsify the real history of Palestine," Yazen said after the graduation ceremony, themed ’Building and Unity’ to stress the importance of Palestinian unity.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Abu Ayesh, who was injured during Israel’s lethal assault on Gaza in 2008-2009, finally received a degree in nursing.

Despite suffering a hand injury during the Israeli attack, he persevered and succeeded in obtaining his degree.

"The Israelis want to stop us. Their warplanes even destroyed our university laboratory, but we carried on," he said.

Mohammed, whose health was affected by the injury, feels there is a heavy shortage of doctors and medical professionals in Gaza to help those injured in the Israeli attacks.

Another graduate, Mahmoud Al-Sarraj, spoke of his arduous circumstances while studying at the Islamic University of Gaza.

At times, he had to walk to the university due to a shortage of fuel for transportation. At night, he was forced to study by candlelight because of frequent power outages.

"I dedicate my graduation to the Palestinian people. I regard it as a victory, since the Israeli occupation tried hard to make us ignorant," Mahmoud said.

The head of the Hamas administration in the Gaza Strip, Ismail Hanyieh, attended the ceremony to honour the students, and praised Palestinian students for their patience and determination.
