THAILAND: EMERGENCY DECREE EXTENDED IN SOUTH

BANGKOK, July 12 (Bernama) -- The emergency decree imposed in the south has been extended by another 60 days, outgoing Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said Tuesday.

The three provinces covered by the decree are Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani.

The decree would take effect on July 20 as the present decree expired on July 19, he told reporters after chairing the last Cabinet meeting of the Democrat-led government, here.

Abhisit explained that the decree was not extended by another 90 days as is the normal practice because it was up to the new government to decide on the matter.

The Democrat lost in the July 3 general election. The next government will be led by Pheu Thai.
