SENTINEL ASIA MEETING TO SHARE FUTURE PROGRAMMES IN DISASTER MANAGEMENT
PUTRAJAYA, July 13 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's continuous commitment and engagement in the Sentinel Asia Committee is proof of its dedication in promoting the Asian spirit of helping and enriching its neighbours in Asia Pasific countries who faced natural disasters.
Science, Technology and Innovation Deputy Minister Fadillah Yusof said Malaysia was proud to be part of the team, and the fact that three agencies from the country participated in the initiative, was proof of its high commitment.
"The latest was the appointment of the National Space Agency of Malaysia as data analysis node for Sentinel Asia Step 2," he said when officiating the 4th Joint Project Team Meeting for Sentinel Asia Step 2 here Tuesday.
Sentinel Asia, a disaster management initiative under the purview of the Asia Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum, is a collaboration programme between space agencies and disaster management-related agencies to share disaster-related information on a near real-time basis across the Asia Pacific Region.
All agencies in the 24 countries involved, use mainly satellite-based technology and systems such as remote sensing images, Web-Gis technology, satellite commmunication services and satellite navigation.
Sentinel Asia Step 1, which was implemented from 2006 to 2007, continued with Sentinel Asia Step 2 in 2008, as a five-year programme with an expanded dissemination effort using new communication satellite winds.
Sentinel Asia Step 3, which will be implemented from 2013, will see the establishment of a comprehensive disaster management support system put in place.
Meanwhile, United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary Dr Noeleen Heyzer said Malaysia was a very active member state of the United Nations.
"There is already a joint working group within Asean where Malaysia was a very strong member, as a joint working group between Asean and Unescap and the United Nations Asia Pacific."
Meanwhile, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency associate executive director Toshio Doura shared a letter of appreciation from the Japanese Government's Disaster Prevention and Preparedness director, Kiyoshi Natori.
