CUBAN CONTEMPORARY PAINTING EXHIBITION PROMISES TO BE 'SMOKING HOT'

By Balkish Awang

KUALA LUMPUR, July 13 (Bernama) -- A nine-day Cuban Contemporary Painting Exhibition which kicked off this eveing, promises to be 'smoking hot'.

Opened by outgoing Cuban Ambassador Carlos A. Amores, the exhibiton will see 40 Cuban artists presenting their masterpieces to enslave local art connoisseurs.

The artists are a testament that the 'Land of the Havana Cigar' is also renowned for its exquisite contemporary art.

In his speech, Amores described Cuban contemporary art as a heterogeneous movement, integrated and developed by consecutive generations which imprinted its own themes, styles and interpretations to material spritual realities of each period.

"All these 'races' and cultures, mixed and combined themselves inside the wonderful melting pot constituted by our cozy tropical environment, finally gave birth to a strong sense of nationality.

"That nationality is what we recognise today as the Cuban identity," he said.

With this exhibition, Amores noted, they could also draw a line of
continuity in their visual arts, and show the good health and endless flow of new and good Cuban artists, graduated from their art schools and universities.

This is Amores' last art promotion event in Malaysia, as he will be leaving for Cuba soon, upon completion of his tour of duty.
