Kim Jong-il occasionally losing consciousness since April: report
TOKYO, Sept. 14 (Yonhap) -- Amid recent reports that North Korean leader Kim Jong-il collapsed and is recovering from a stroke or cerebral hemorrhage, a Japanese newspaper reported Sunday that Kim has been occasionally losing consciousness since April this year.
According to the Mainichi Shimbun, Kim occasionally fell unconscious at his desk and was not able to properly manage important affairs of the ruling Workers Party.
Quoting a Chinese official dealing with North Korean affairs, the newspaper said Kim's illness took a serious turn summer of last year when some vital organs, including his kidney and heart, began to show abnormal symptoms.
Kim, who is known to work long hours, was not able to work late during May and June, as his condition became more serious. His judgement reportedly became clouded and he was becoming less flexible in making decisions related to the six party denuclearization talks, which also involve South Korea, the U.S., China, Russia and Japan.
As other officials began to more frequently observe the North Korean leader falling unconscious from April, his duties have been minimized, the paper reported.
Kim focused on recuperation for nearly two months, the daily said, prior to meeting with Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping in June.
