Almost every S. Korean household connected to high-speed Internet

SEOUL, Sept. 14 (Yonhap) -- Almost every household in South Korea is connected to high-speed Internet, a government report said Sunday.

As of the end of July, 15.09 million households were registered with high-speed Internet services, marking an increase of 620,000 from the previous year, according to the report released by Korea Communications Commission, the country's telecommunications regulator.

The figure represents 95 percent of the 15.88 million households in South Korea.

KT, the nation's largest operator of broadband Internet services, had 6.74 million households registered, accounting for 44.7 percent of all high-speed Internet users, followed by Hanarotelecom with 3.38 million (22.4 percent) and LG Powercom with 1.99 million (13.2 percent). The rest of the users were registered to Internet services provided by cable TV operators.

The number is likely to increase when Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) services are launched in the country next year, an official at the commission said.
