SOUTH KOREA'S POSCO E&C EYES LRT, MRT PROJECTS IN MALAYSIA

KUALA LUMPUR, July 13 (Bernama) -- POSCO Engineering & Construction Co Ltd (POSCO E&C), a South Korean steelmaker and construction company, is eyeing contracts under the multi-billion ringgit Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit(MRT)project.

Its president and chief executive officer Chung Dong-Hwa said the company has just completed the bidding process for the RM1.5 billion Ampang Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) extension project.

"Our proposal for the project is under evaluation, so we are still waiting.

"Besides the Ampang Line project, we are also interested in the
Klang Valley MRT venture," he told reporters after the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Berjaya Corporation Bhd here Wednesday.

Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd is expected to announce the winner of the Ampang Line LRT extension project by September this year.

As for the Klang Valley MRT project, it will likely be decided between August-October.

POSCO E&C is one of the top five construction companies in South Korea.

Among its major projects are the Songdo International Business District in South Korea and North An Khanh New City in Vietnam.

Currently, POSCO E&C is the main contractor for the first phase of the Berjaya Jeju Resort in South Korea.

Under the MoU, both companies will identify possible joint ventures in traditional sectors like property development and infrastructure construction, as well as new business areas such as renewable energy and petrochemical plants.
