DALGISH SAYS PRE-SEASON TOUR A GOOD TRAINNING EXERCISE FOR PLAYERS

PETALING JAYA (Selangor, Malaysia), July 14 (Bernama) -- English Premier League (EPL) club Liverpool FC will make full use of their 2011 Asia Tour to prepare for the 2011/2012 EPL season.

"It will be a good training exercise for us. Every player in the team will get a chance to play. It is a continuation of pre-season training and is important that players get time on the pitch," team manager, Kenny Dalglish told a news conference here.

Joining him at the press conference were Daniel Agger (defender), Dirk Kuyt (striker) and managing director, Ian Ayre.

Also present was Malaysian team manager, Subahan Kamal, coach K. Rajagobal and team captain Safiq Rahim.

The team touched down in Malaysia after playing their first pre-season Asian Tour match against Guangdong Sunray Cave in Guangzhou, China Wednesday night.

'The Reds' defeated Guangdong Sunray Cave 4-3.

The touring EPL team will field a strong line-up for the friendly match against Rajagobal's squad on Saturday which has been scheduled at 5.45pm at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

"We are honoured to come here and we are surprised with the warm welcome by local supporters. When we arrived here early this morning, they gathered at the airport and the hotel.

"It will be an exciting match and we are certainly looking forward to it," said Dalglish.

When asked to comment on reports that the team was intending to sign Aston Villa's Stewart Downing, Dalglish said they have been given permission to talk to the player.

"We will now try to agree some personal terms with him but it will all depend on the medical report. It is in progress and we will see what happens," he said.

If Downing agrees to go to Anfield, he would become Liverpool's third high-profile pre-season signing, following the arrival of Jordan Henderson from Sunderland and Charlie Adam from Blackpool.
