SOOSAI: KL INTERPOL YET TO RECEIVE INFORMATION FROM NEW DELHI

KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 (Bernama) -- The saga of Malaysia's high-profile criminal suspect Michael Soosai, currently under Indian police custody, appears to have taken a strange twist.
Bernama learnt that the Interpol office at the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman here is in the dark over the 'status' of the 53-year-old suspect, wanted in Malaysia for a series of high-profile commercial crimes and murder.
This is because, Interpol Malaysia has not received any information from its counterpart in New Delhi on matters pertaining to Soosai, since he was nabbed by Indian police last year.
Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Syed Ismail Syed Azizan said, this was despite Malaysian police sending two e-mails this year to the Indian police.
The first e-mail was sent on March 24, followed by the other on April 26.
Syed Ismail said both reminders was sent via email with multiple questions pertaining to Soosai, who was arrested on Aug 24, last year in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
"Actually, on March 24, we sent a message (e-mail) and enquiry to Indian Interpol (based in New Delhi) on the suspect's status.
"They replied that as the suspect was held by Tamil Nadu police, New Delhi Interpol was still waiting for feedback on his status (from Tamil Nadu police).
"So, only when New Delhi Interpol received a reply from Tamil Nadu police, would they inform our interpol," he told Bernama here Thursday when asked to comment on the case.
On the second e-mail, Syed Ismail said: "Until now, we have not received any reply. So, we are aware and understand that the suspect is under Indian police custody since 2010. (However) We have yet to receive any information (from the Indian police) on it."
Nevertheless, Syed Ismail said, a third e-mail was sent Thursday, to New Delhi Interpol "for answers and positive lead on the suspect".
"We are very aware and concerned over the matter," he added.
Bernama, in a report from Chennai Wednesday, reported that the year-long deft silence on the part of the Malaysian federal police over the suspect's arrest, had left the Indian authorities baffled.
The report said the home ministry had yet to seek the suspect's extradition -- despite Malaysia and India signing an extradition treaty last year to stem cross-border crimes -- and this has raised a myriad of questions.
The suspect, who was once on Interpol's 'Wanted List' for many years, is currently languishing in the Chennai Central Prison.
Among others, he allegedly faked his own death in 2002 to cash out on his insurance policy and fled to South India.
