EGYPT IMPRESSED WITH THE ROLE OF MACC IN FIGHTING CORRUPTION

KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 (Bernama) -- A visiting Egyptian deputy minister is impressed with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) role in tackling corruption and is keen to set it as an example in fighthing the issue in his country.

Egypt's Deputy Minister of the Ministry of State for Administrative
Development Dr Ashraf H. Abdelwahab said the fact that it was managed separately from other government offices in order to provide an independent perspective was very interesting.

"MACC is a very good example on how a structure to monitor and prevent or prosecute corruption or corrupt officials and the way it is operated is very interesting because you are not reporting to an executive branch of government but you are reporting to a committee that has no interest in any party or person," he told Bernama here Thursday.

Abdelwahab is on a five-day working visit to Malaysia starting Monday where he was given a briefing on efforts to fight corruption in the country.

He said Egypt was also looking forward to forge a stronger relationship with Malaysia especially in trade and the education sector.

"We admire the Malaysian experience and I think we have to strengthen relations in terms of getting more officials to visit Malaysia and vice versa," he said.

Abdelwahab said Egyptians were confident of rebuilding the country after the January revolution and were looking forward to the general election in September.

On tourism, he said the number of tourists coming to Egypt was increasing as security was getting better and the streets in Cairo and all the other cities around Egypt were gradually getting back to normal.
