SURABAYA, July 15 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin is arriving here later Thursday to a busy schedule, which includes a meeting with a group of young Indonesian entrepreneurs and corporate figures in Surabaya in his effort to woo investors to Malaysia.

The Deputy Prime Minister, who is accompanied by his wife Noorainee Abdul Rahman, will be here on a three-day working visit until Saturday.

Surabaya, the second largest city in Indonesia after Jakarta, is the administrative and industrial capital of the East Java province.

Its economic growth in 2010 was eight per cent above the national average of six per cent.

Currently East Java’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is Rp684.1 trillion compared to Jakarta’s GDP of Rp684 trillion.

East Java contributed 14.95 per cent to the national economy in 2009 and is one of the busiest ports in Indonesia.

Its principal exports include sugar, tobacco and coffee.

It has a large shipyard, and numerous specialised naval schools.

Surabaya's economy has been also influenced by the recent growth in foreign industries and the completion of the Suramadu bridge, which links the province with the Madura Island.

It is currently in the process of building high rise skyscrapers comprising apartments, condominiums, and hotels as one way to attract foreigners to the city.

According to a release from the DPM's Office, Muhyiddin will be also meeting with East Java Governor Soekarwo to discuss areas of interest, especially on economic cooperation.

Another important event for the Deputy Prime Minister in Surabaya will be a meeting with more than 20 editors within the Jawa Pos Group media company.

Jawa Pos Group or Jawa Pos National Network (JPNN) is the biggest newspaper network in Indonesia, with more than 151 regional and national newspapers.

The group's newspaper, Jawa Pos, based in Surabaya, was the leading newspaper in Indonesia at the end of 2009, according to Nielsen Media Research, with the highest number of readers.

It is also a trendsetting and award winning newspaper, with a daily
circulation of over 1.4 million copies.

While in Surabaya, Muhyiddin will also meet Malaysian student leaders from universities around the city and attend a dinner with Malaysian students and community in Surabaya.
