MALAYSIA TO HOST 2ND WORLD CONFERENCE ON RIBA
KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 (Bernama) -- The second World Conference on Riba in Kuala Lumpur will set the stage for an in-depth and comprehensive deliberation on Riba or usury (the practice of lending money at high interest rates) from all perspectives, conference convener, Professor Dr. Ahamed Kameel Mydin Meera said.
Themed "The Riba Conundrum: Impartial Outlook from Accounting, Legal and Religious Perspectives", the two-day conference will start on July 26.
"The inaugural World Conference on Riba which was held last November received tremendous support from both Islamic and Western scholars, as well as industry leaders. We expect similar support this time," Kameel said in a statement.
"Riba is no longer an ‘Islamic’ issue. The term could be different, some may call it interest, some will call it usury, but the effect is felt by everyone, irrespective of race or religion," said Kameel, who is also the Head of Department of Finance, Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).
According to Organizing Committee Chairman, Shirazdeen Adam Shah, this year's discussions, to be participated by intellectuals, business community members and policy makers, will revolve around the relationship between accounting standards, legal tender and Riba.
Among the leading speakers for the conference will be Attorney and President of the Public Banking Institute (USA) Ellen Hodgson Brown, Founder of the Global Exchange Trading Systems (UK) Richard Logie and Founder and Chairman of the al-Ghazzali Centre for Islamic Sciences and Human Development (Australia) Imam Afroz Ali.
