CENTRAL BANK CAN FREEZE ACCOUNTS OF THOSE SUSPECTED OF JEOPARDISING COUNTRY'S SECURITY

BACHOK (Kelantan, Malaysia), July 15 (Bernama) -- Bank Negara Malaysia (Malaysia's Central Bank/BNM) can freeze the bank accounts of individuals suspected of being involved in actions that can jeopardise the country's security, Deputy Finance Minister Dr Awang Adek Hussin said Friday.

He said the freezing of an account, provided for under the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act, could be done based on police recommendations.

Speaking to reporters after a "gotong-royong" to clean the Kampung Panjang cemetery here, Awang Adek said Bank Negara would not only trace inflows of money to local banks but also their outflows.

He was commening on calls from various groups demanding actions following claims that last Saturday's illegal rally organiser, S. Ambiga, had used a local bank account to receive foreign funds.
