Brown down as Cats edge Lions
Another sickening head knock to Brisbane captain Jonathan Brown added injury to insult as Geelong came from behind to down the Lions by 29 points on Sunday in their AFL clash at the Gabba.
It loomed as a day to remember for the battling Lions as they went toe-to-toe with an out-of-sorts Cats in front of a crowd of 19,906.
But it became one they will want to forget after they lost their inspirational skipper in the third term, before going down 20.13 (133) to 15.14 (104) to the Cats.
James Podsiadly scored eight goals for the visitors who snapped a two-game losing run with the win.
Brown was knocked out cold by a stray arm from team-mate Mitch Clark in a marking contest.
Brown's head hit the turf hard and he lay prone for several minutes as medical staff worked away on him.
He regained consciousness after being taken off the field and was taken to hospital for scans.
It is the second serious head knock for Brown this season - he missed six games with facial fractures suffered in the opening round.
Brown was the biggest casualty in the heavyweight third term collision that also featured Geelong's Tom Lonergan and Harry Taylor.
Clark - in his first match back from an ankle complaint - also lay beside Brown in pain after the clash but was able to stay on the field, albeit with a noticeable limp.
Scores were locked up 77-all at the time but, by the final break, the Lions had fought their way to a three-point lead - 13.11 (89) to 13.8 (86).
But the fourth term was all Geelong as Podsiadly - who had five goals by halftime - cut loose.
For Geelong, Tom Hawkins also grabbed three goals while Jimmy Bartel led disposals with 32.
For the Lions, small forward Todd Banfield impressed with four goals while Pearce Hanley nabbed 30 touches.
Podsiadly ensured the Cats clawed their way to a two-point halftime lead.
Despite Podsiadly kicking his team's first three goals of the match, the Lions had their noses in front at the first break - 4.6 (30) to 3.4 (22).
The Lions threatened to kick away in the second term when Patrick Karnezis' second major from a clever left foot snap gave them a 14-point lead.
But the Lions failed to convert possession into points, and Podsiadly's fifth goal ensured the visitors grabbed the lead for the first time since the opening scoring in the first term.
By halftime, the Lions boasted 217 possessions to Geelong's 164, 126 kicks to the Cats' 79 and 71 marks to 33, but still trailed on the scoreboard.
Yet Geelong looked vulnerable against a fired-up Lions after arriving at the Gabba still smarting from back-to-back defeats and the loss of ruckman Brad Ottens (suspension).
However, the Cats (14-2 record) finally came alive in the fourth to grab their ninth win in 10 games against the Lions (3-13).
