POLYTECHNIC ACHIEVES INTERNATIONAL STANDARD GRADUATE MARKETABILITY TARGET
KULIM (Kedah, Malaysia), July 19 (Bernama) -- Polytechnic graduates who were employed after completion of their studies have exceeded the international benchmark, said Higher Education Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
He said the international benchmark stipulated 70 per cent marketability for graduates or gaining employment within six months of completing their studies.
The government, however, still gave priority to the workers' welfare so that they would not be neglected, particularly the salary paid by the industry to certificate and diploma holders was commensurate with their knowledge and skill.
"The continuous enhancement of skills to become a highly skilled individual should be rewarded with commensurate pay," Mohamed Khaled told reporters after the 6th convocation of Politeknik Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah Kulim (PTSB), here Tuesday.
He said developed countries needed highly skilled human capital and that was why technical studies had to be mainstreamed through a transformation process so that it would not become a second option sector but an alternative for students who opted for further studies.
He said that the country's modernisation would be filled with all the technologies and equipment that needed technical people to mobilise them, as such, they must be paid a salary that was commensurate with their knowledge and skill.
Through the new economic model, the government targeted a work force of 3.3 million by the year 2020. Of this total, 1.5 million were skilled workers in the vocational and technical fields while the polytechnics were expected to contribute more than 600,000 workers, Mohamed Khaled said.
The role of the polytechnics would continue to be strengthened and
transformed to fulfill the needs of the industry besides enabling the graduates to enhance their skills and further their studies, he said.
Mohamed Khaled said the polytechnics had been asked to enhance cooperation with the industry so that the graduates they produced would always be relevant to the technological development and their needs.
In his speech earlier, Mohamed Khaled said the country needed to raise the number of its skilled work force by 37 per cent by the year 2015 and 50 per cent by the year 2020.
A total of 1,541 graduands in the fields of civil, mechanical and electrical engineering as well as commerce received their certificates and diploma at the two-day convocation beginning Monday.
