Vic marks Battle of Fromelles anniversary
The names of lost Australian soldiers recently identified in a Fromelles mass grave have been read out to mark the 95th anniversary of the bloody battle.
Crowds gathered in Melbourne at a ceremony to lay wreaths and poppies to remember those who gave their lives in the Battle of Fromelles on July 19, 1916.
On that day more than 5500 Australian troops were killed, wounded or went missing in a fight against Germany regarded as the nation's single worst day in its military history.
Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu said it was important to commemorate what he described as a "landmark and tragic moment" in Australia's past.
The history of the Fromelles conflict was again revived last year with the reburial of the remains of 250 soldiers into individual graves.
Among 14 soldiers recently identified in Fromelles were three from Victoria - Private Herbert James Haslam from North Carlton, Corporal David Frederick Livingston from East Melbourne and Captain Thomas Francis Sheridan from Prahran.
"These soldiers paid the ultimate price and now their identities have been confirmed along with so many others in recent years and their dignity restored and that is so important to families involved," Mr Baillieu said.
Australian Army chaplain Catie Inches-Ogden said the reburial of the lost soldiers in 2010 had also provided healing for many families left in the dark for decades.
"Commemoration should always have two directions, honouring the past and contemplating the impact the past has on our future", she told the service on Tuesday.
