MAKKAH METRO SEEKS HELP FROM KTMB PERSONNEL FOR 2011 HAJ SEASON

KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 (Bernama) -- The expertise of Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) personnel has been sought again to help run the Makkah Metro, the odern electric train service for haj pilgrims in Mecca, during the haj season this year.

KTMB President Dr Aminuddin Adnan said Makkah Metro had asked KTMB, national rail service provider, to increase the number of its personnel to be deployed to Saudi Arabia this year to 200, from only 65 last year.

"However, we are only able to deploy 145 of our personnel because we also have to run our operation here," he told reporters after a gathering here Wednesday to fete KTMB personnel who would leave for Saudi Arabia Wenesday night.

The first batch of 41 KTMB personnel will help run the Makkah Metro until November.

The Makkah Metro train service, officially the Al Mashaaer Al Muqaddassah Metro, began its operation last year.

Built by China Railway Construction Corporation Limited (CRCC), the train will transport pilgrims over a stretch of 18 kilometres from Arafah to Mina.

Aminuddin said the invitation from Makkah Metro to utilise KTMB personnel in Saudi Arabia reflected on the good performance showed by KTMB personnel involved in the programme last year.

Hence, he said it was hoped that this year's team would continue to keep both the Malaysian and the KTMB flags flying high.

Meanwhile, Azman Abdullah, 49, who is selected to serve as a Makkah Metro Station Master in Mina for the second time this year, said he was excited and looking forward to offer his service to Makkah Metro despite the fact that the task to manage up to three million pilgrims during the haj season would be very challenging.

"With my 29-year experience with KTMB and the month-long intensive training here, InsyaAllah (God willing), I will be able to do it," he said.

Yahya Mohd Noh, 59, who has 37 years of experience as a train inspector, also said he was grateful for being selected to join the team this year.

"I consider myself very lucky as I can offer my expertise to Makkah Metro, and at the same time, perform Haj," he said.

Technical staff, Muhamamad Azizul, 28, who is the youngest KTMB personnel in this year's team, on the other hand, said he hoped that the experience he would gain from working with the Makkah Metro would help him to advance in his career, especially at the international level.
