CPM IDEOLOGY AND PRACTICE BANNED IN MALAYSIA

KUALA KLAWANG (Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia), July 21 (Bernama) -- Communist ideology and its practice as propagated by the outlawed Communist Party of Malaya (CPM) are banned in Malaysia, Information, Communications and Culture Minister Dr Rais Yatim said Wednesday.

He said the ban was not to be misconstrued with the government's bilateral ties with China and other communist entities.

"These are based on international relations which are subject to the sovereignty of a country. Certain quarters are mixing it all up. They are asking why we can be on good terms with China but not allow communism to be practised in Malaysia?" he said.

"The fact is that communism as an ideology, an administration and a system is not acceptable in Malaysia due to historical factors such as mass killing and a system which tainted the social fabric of our society," he said.

Dr Rais also emphasised that communism was contradictory to Islam and the other major religions, the Rukunegara and the constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy.

"The ministry and other government departments will include this matter in the daily work. We will constantly distribute pamphlets and disseminate information to educate the people," he said.

Dr Rais, who is the Jelebu MP, said the younger generation was ignorant about communism and thought it was just something on the Internet or had non-governmental organisation (NGO) status.

He said the Cabinet was monitoring activities by certain quarters which used politics to favour or sympathise with the communist movement in the country.
