STRATEGIES FOR SUSTAINABLE WORLD-CLASS EDUCATION

KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 (Bernama) -- The higher education ministry is working out strategies to reform and rebuild a sustainable world-class medical education system in the country.

Its Academic Development Management Division director, Professor Dr Zarida Hambali, said by 2020, the ministry was targeting the ratio of one doctor to 400 population (1:400) and a knowledge-based economy.

"Among the strategies is the reform of our medical schools and nursing colleges. There should be the incorporation of research findings into medical practice...the medical pedagogical approaches are being reviewed and monitored periodically," she said at the National Conference On Redefining and Reforming Medical Education at the Putra World Trade Centre here Thursday.

Dr Zaridah said there was also a need to make adjustments and adaptation of western models to match with local context whereby, the problem-based-learning approach should be incorporated in the teaching-learning experience.

“This should lead to a vast improvement in the students’ problem-finding and problem-solving skills.

"It is imperative that the medical students should no longer be passive learners but they should shift their learning mode to that of a self-directed, problem-based mode," she added.
