CHINA'S RED CROSS BRANCHES URGED TO ENHANCE TRANSPARENCY
NG CHE YEAN
BEIJING, July 22 (Bernama) -- The Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) has ordered its branches to enhance transparency in donations and expenditures following a series of scandals that had shaken public trust in the government-sponsored charity organization.
The RCSC said in an online statement that information about donations, expenditures, charity material purchases, and the allocation of the donations should all be open and transparent to the public.
The donor will be able to check the information one day after the donation, according to the statement.
The charity organization will also publish its spending of public-funded overseas trips, vehicles and receptions, and its auditing reports over the past two years, said the statement.
Earlier in April, a photo of an invoice was posted to the Chinese popular microblog, Weibo, showing that a department of the RCSC's Shanghai branch spent 9,859 Yuan (US$1,524) on a meal, sparking public outrage.
It raised questions and debates among the public on the charity
organization.
Another case that affected the public trust was when Guo Meimei, a
20-year-old girl who claimed to have links with RCSC, posted photos on her microblog showing her excessively lavish lifestyle.
