BRAZIL'S ACCESSION TO TAC WILL RAISE TREATY'S GLOBAL PROFILE
By Ahmad Fuad Yahya
NUSA DUA (BALI), July 23 (Bernama) -- Foreign Minister Anifah Aman said Asean foreign ministers have welcomed Brazil’s interest to accede to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC) in Southeast Asia.
The accession of Brazil as an emerging global power, he said, would raise TAC’s global profile as the pre-eminent security treaty in the region.
"In addition, it would also help to forge closer cooperation between Brazil and countries in the region," he said in a statement here Saturday.
Anifah said Asean foreign ministers, however, viewed that it was not timely to consider Serbia's intention to accede to the TAC, taking into account the Guidelines for Accession to the TAC.
"Malaysia expressed the view that Serbia’s accession to the TAC is subject to the requirements in the Guidelines for Accession to the TAC, which was adopted by the Asean Foreign Ministers in April last year.
"On another note, Malaysia welcomes Canada’s effort to accede to the Third Protocol Amending the TAC," he said.
The ministers, he said, also welcomed the adoption of the Asean Security Outlook Standardised Format, submitted by the senior officials.
The ministers had discussed the matter during the plenary and retreat session of the Asean Foreign Ministers Meeting here on Tuesday, which was chaired by Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa.
On the Asean Plus Three meeting on Thursday, Anifah said foreign ministers from member countries had recognised the rapidly expanding economic cooperation activities among the countries, including efforts to liberalise trade among the member countries through studies on the East Asia Free Trade Area and the Comprehensive Economic Partnership for East Asia.
The meeting, he said, appreciated South Korea’s initiative to revitalise the East Asia Forum (EAF) and looked forward to the adoption of the concept paper on the EAF at the ninth EAF Meeting in Cheng Du, China, in September this year.
The Asean Plus Three meeting was between Asean foreign ministers and China, Japan and South Korea. It was also chaired by Marty.
