UPHOLD CULTURE AND MANNERS FOR A MORAL SOCIETY, SAYS MINISTER
BEAUFORT (Sabah, Malaysia), July 25 (Bernama) -- Every clan association should remind its members to uphold culture and manners for an ethical and highly moral society, Minister of Information, Communications and Culture Dr Rais Yatim said Sunday.
He said the practice of cultural values and traditions could repel negative elements that could split a race and damage the solidarity forged with other communities.
"When courtesy and manners are imbedded in all members of our society, especially the younger generation, there will be no such negative elements," he said when closing Adau Janang Gayuh (Paramount Leader Day) celebrations here.
The text of his speech was read out by Deputy Minister Joseph Salang Gandum.
Rais said the ministry would continue to give its support to the Sabah government and community cultural associations to strengthen cultural courtesy.
President of the United Bisaya Association Datuk Lajim Ukin, who is Beaufort Member of Parliament, said the celebration of Adau Janang Gayuh, which was synonymous with Bisaya society, was especially inspiring this year.
Lajim, who is Deputy Minister of Housing and Local Government, said visitors joining in the celebration touched 60,000 because this was the first year it was included in the state tourism calendar.
